Yoga for Change: Trans & Queer Inclusivity in Wellness

Please join With Love DC and Bluebird Sky Yoga for our monthly Yoga for Change conversation. This month's conversation is about trans and queer inclusivity in wellness.

If you work with people, you work with trans and queer people! Within the world of wellness, be it massage therapy, personal training, or yoga, we are responsible for facilitating welcoming spaces for individuals to engage in deep and vulnerable ways with their bodies and minds. We cannot simply expect those we teach or serve to be along for the ride if they do not feel understood, valued, and seen. In this discussion, you'll have the opportunity to ask any questions you have about being a welcoming and affirming wellness provider for trans and queer individuals. You'll also learn all the language tools you need to speak respectfully and without unintentionally projecting harmful assumptions when you work with clients and students. If you want to be a more educated provider for your trans and queer students and clients, or have questions you've been afraid afraid to ask, join us!

We will discuss and consider the following questions, along with the ones you bring to the table:

-Why is this a population we need to think about in particular?
- What can it feel like to be visibly or invisibly trans and/or queer?
- What might welcoming spaces feel like to trans and queer people?
- What is queer & trans affirming language?

About J: J Bernick (they/them) is a genderqueer yoga teacher offering restorative yoga and gentle yoga asana classes, non-asana yoga classes, and private yoga in the Washington, D.C. area, on Piscataway and Ncotchtank land. J aims to provide a safe, relaxed environment for students of all bodies and identities to find embodiment, presence and peace through the study of yoga philosophy, and the many practices of yoga, including but not limited to asana (postures), pranayama (breath work), and dharana (single-pointed focus, or meditation). J encourages students to experiment and ask questions to grow their practice and themselves. J completed a 50-Hour Restorative Yoga training with Bernie Wandel in 2019, and a 200-Hour Power Yoga Teacher Training with Mimi Rieger in 2018. J is continuing to seek education, with particular interests in accessible yoga, functional anatomy, yoga philosophy, and meditative practices.
